French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Israel of pursuing a policy of “permanent war” in Gaza, warning that France may consider economic sanctions against Israel if military operations in Gaza City continue.

Speaking to Channel 12, ahead of France’s expected recognition of a Palestinian state, Macron emphasized that France’s top priority remains the release of all hostages while reaffirming that “Israel has the right to defend itself.”

Macron noted that Israel “restored its credibility” in the region with military successes following the October 7 attacks, but is now damaging its international image.

Israel has achieved many successes in Gaza. Now it is time to open a new phase,” Macron said, as reported by Times of Israel and relayed by Telegrafi.

The French leader stressed that the recognition of Palestine is aimed at isolating Hamas and “encouraging new behavior and commitments” in the peace process.

When asked about the possibility of Israel annexing parts of the West Bank in response to recognition, Macron firmly rejected the notion, stating that the West Bank “has nothing to do with Hamas” and warning that such moves only undermine the two-state solution.
