The Municipality of Prishtina has launched a public competition for the design of a memorial dedicated to the legendary commander Adem Jashari and the sacrifice of his family, with a budget of €150,000.
Purpose and Vision
- The memorial aims to eternally honor the extraordinary sacrifice of the Jashari family from Prekaz, Skenderaj, who are recognized for their supreme courage and commitment to freedom.
- Adem Jashari, commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), fell alongside 58 members of his family, including children, women, and elderly, in an event considered one of the most significant acts of self-sacrifice in human history for the universal ideal of freedom.
- The memorial is envisioned to be placed in a public urban space in the capital, making the legacy of the Jashari family an integral part of everyday life and the public expression of freedom.
Urban Planning and Location
- The memorial is planned for central Prishtina, situated between the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo building and the Stone Mosque.
- It will connect with an existing pedestrian walkway ending at Ibrahim Rugova Square and extend toward the old city via an underground passage under Agim Ramadani Street.
- In the urban plan, Agim Ramadani Street will be moved underground, with a pedestrian plaza above it, linking the existing boulevard with the old city.
- The memorial and its surrounding space will be located on this elevated plaza, forming the main subject of the design competition.
Cultural Significance
- The project aligns with the vision of Prishtina’s mayor, Përparim Rama, for a modern, inclusive capital that highlights its cultural heritage.
- The memorial is expected to strengthen the cultural and historical identity of the city and provide a space of remembrance, reflection, and civic interaction.
