NATO launched a new mission on Friday to strengthen defenses on Europe’s eastern flank following a Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace earlier this week. The announcement was made by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
“It is reckless and unacceptable. We cannot allow Russian drones to enter allied airspace,” Rutte said, announcing the start of the operation codenamed “Eastern Sentry.”
The mission, which began Friday evening, involves a combination of air and ground assets operating from NATO bases.
“Allies, including Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany, have already committed to the mission, with others expected to join,” Rutte added.
NATO’s top military commander, Alexus Grynkewich, emphasized the Alliance’s determination to guarantee the security of all members:
“Poland and citizens across the Alliance must be assured by our rapid response earlier this week and our important announcement today.”
