The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has posted on Instagram a provocative video from his party after announcing yesterday’s victory in the local elections.
His son Danilo can be seen there, singing nationalist songs to Kosovo.
In the video published by Vucic, a cheerful group can be seen sitting at a table with plenty of food. Those gathered sing the song “I’m a boy from Kosovo”.
“I was born down there, where the dream flows, I am a boy from Kosovo, I am proud of it, I was born there, there I will remain, o peony, o symbol, the fields of Kosovo”, the text says.
“My son Danilo and my brothers, Long live Serbia,” wrote Vucic.
Local elections were held in 89 cities and municipalities. Lists around the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won in Belgrade, Niš and Novi Sad.
All the lists of the SNS and its coalition partners in the local elections carried the name of the President of Serbia – “Aleksandar Vučić – Serbia tomorrow”, which the opposition saw as misuse and a conflict of interest, given that the Constitution defines the head of the state as president of all citizens.
Local elections in Serbia were repeated after those in December following allegations of vote-rigging and the failure to establish a city assembly, and part of the opposition boycotted yesterday’s elections.
Election day was marked by incidents at the polling stations, from the SNS call center, tear gas, clashes to paying citizens to vote for the SNS and bringing people to the polling stations by bus.
