High-risk World Cup qualifier prompts lockdown measures in Tirana
TIRANA, Albania – Authorities have announced tight security protocols ahead of the high-tension Albania vs. Serbia football match, scheduled for Saturday in the capital, as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
According to Ora News, around 1,500 police officers will be deployed to ensure order and prevent unrest, while the Serbian national team will receive continuous police escort throughout their stay in Albania.
Tech and movement controls to prevent incidents
The stadium will be equipped with facial recognition cameras and anti-drone systems to prevent any potential provocations or disturbances during the match.
In addition, personalized tickets will be required for entry, with ID checks at the gates. Major roads near the stadium will be closed to traffic, and local businesses will temporarily shut down.
One of the most unusual measures includes a ban on people standing on balconies or at windows overlooking the stadium during the match—an effort to prevent any incidents from private residences.
A high-stakes match under heavy watch
Albania and Serbia have a tense footballing history, with previous encounters marred by political tension and fan violence. The Albanian government is aiming to ensure a peaceful and safe event, while international observers will closely monitor the situation.
