The Basic Court in Pristina has granted double pension to three survivors of sexual violence during the 1998-99 war in Kosovo, the Kosovo Center for the Rehabilitation of Torture Survivors (KKRMT) announced on Wednesday.

Since 2014, when the legislation was approved, survivors of sexual violence in Kosovo can obtain the status of a victim of sexual violence and thus benefit from a monthly pension of 230 euros.

KRMT said that the judicial processes for these cases have started since 2021.

“Initially, lawsuits were prepared and submitted for 5 cases, while later the number of cases continued to increase”, said this center.

It is not known the exact number of people raped during the last war in Kosovo, but, according to a report by the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention, this figure reaches up to 20 thousand.

But, according to data from November of last year, only nearly 2,000 people have applied to receive the status of a person violated during the war in Kosovo. Of them, the status has been approved for about 1,600 people.

The KKRMT said that the court’s decision on Wednesday “is sufficient evidence” that the survivors should be granted the right to receive two pensions.
