The British group AstraZeneca has admitted for the first time in court that some of its vaccines against ‘Covid’ cause fatal blood clots in the veins.
The local Daily Mail network writes that the rare side effect is at the center of a multi-million dollar compensation claim by British citizens who have been maimed or lost their loved ones by the pharmaceutical giant’s ‘defective’ vaccines.
Cambridge-based AstraZeneca, which disputes the claims, admitted in documents filed in February that in rare cases it causes fatal blood clots, known in Britain as TTS (thrombosis with symptomatic thrombocytopenia).
This complication, listed as a side effect of the vaccine, was previously labeled as “vaccine-induced thrombocytopenia”. The admission made by AstraZeneca may now lead to individual damages in each case, writes the Daily Mail.
The development comes as the company announced profits of £10bn in 2024 alone.
One of those seeking compensation is father-of-two IT engineer Jamie Scott, who has been left unable to work due to permanent brain injuries after receiving the vaccine in April 2021.
It is one of 51 cases of the lawsuit which is estimated to reach 100 million pounds.
His wife, Kate Scott, said: “I hope this admission brings a solution now even though it is late. We ask that they apologize to us, provide compensation for us and other affected families, we do not give up.”
New documents showed a reversal of language used by AstraZeneca in previous sessions, when the company insisted the serious side effect could not have been caused by their “generic level” vaccine.
Health officials have identified cases of the effect in the blood from AstraZeneca’s vaccine in Europe since March 2021, just two months after the vaccine was released on the market.
By April, the evidence became clear and the vaccine began to be limited, the media wrote.
Around 50 million doses of AstraZeneca have been injected in total in Britain.
