Croatian Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković has issued a stark warning about Serbia’s military buildup, accusing Belgrade of expanding its arsenal with offensive capabilities and urging Western allies not to ignore the potential threat to regional security.
Speaking at a conference of Croatian ambassadors, consuls and military representatives, Jandroković argued that Europe must strengthen its security architecture and the European pillar of NATO as the international order undergoes major changes.
“Serbia is not arming itself only with defensive weapons, but also with offensive, attacking weapons. This must be communicated to our Western allies,” Jandroković said.
He stressed that Croatia has a responsibility to ensure that Western governments fully understand the security dynamics in the Western Balkans, particularly as a new generation of political leaders in Europe may have little understanding of the region’s history.
Jandroković specifically pointed to the legacy of Slobodan Milošević and the Greater Serbian policy, warning that the lessons of the Yugoslav wars should not be forgotten when assessing Serbia’s current military ambitions.
His message was direct: Serbia’s growing military capabilities cannot be viewed in isolation from the region’s past or dismissed as routine defense spending. According to Jandroković, Western allies need to pay closer attention to what Belgrade is building and what those capabilities could mean for the security of neighboring countries.
Croatia, he said, will continue to support multilateralism, international law and the existing international order, while also insisting that Europe recognize emerging security risks and be prepared to respond.
