Croatian President Zoran Milanović strongly criticized his government for inviting Israeli Foreign Minister Gideo Saar, questioning why it was necessary to welcome a government member who, according to him, is carrying out “ethnic cleansing” against the people of Gaza.
Milanović reacted after Saar’s statement, in which he compared the Croatian War of Independence to Israel’s aggression in Gaza, calling it an insult to Croatia.
“How wrong the meeting with an Israeli government member is is shown by his statement today, in which he compares the Croatian War of Independence to Israeli aggression in Gaza! This is offensive to Croatia and to all the victims of the aggression against it, because Croatia defended itself, unlike Israel, which is attacking and killing tens of thousands of people in Gaza,” Milanović wrote on Facebook.
He added that the process of recognizing the state of Palestine should begin, considering it an important step toward achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
On the other hand, Israeli Minister Gideo Saar, during a joint press conference with Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman, stated that “recognition of the state of Palestine would not contribute to peace or security,” and in his view, “it would create instability in the region.”
