Danish troops deployed to Greenland have been ordered to maintain combat readiness in the event of a potential military attack by the United States, Denmark’s public broadcaster DR reported on Tuesday, citing military sources.
According to the report, a Danish military order issued last week instructed soldiers stationed in Greenland to be equipped with live ammunition, signaling a heightened state of preparedness. The information was also confirmed by AFP.
Multi-Phase Military Contingency Plan
DR reported that the order outlines “a multi-phase operation”, which includes the possibility of deploying additional troops and military capabilities to Greenland at a later stage, should the situation escalate.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the directive, the public broadcaster declined to disclose further operational details, citing security concerns.
Rising Strategic Sensitivity Around Greenland
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, holds growing strategic and geopolitical importance, particularly due to its location in the Arctic and increasing international interest in the region. The reported military order reflects Denmark’s precautionary measures amid rising global tensions, DR noted.
No official confirmation or response has yet been issued by Danish defense authorities or the U.S. government regarding the report.
