Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced his resignation on Tuesday, just hours after far-right leader Geert Wilders declared his party PVV’s withdrawal from the governing coalition, reports The Guardian.
Wilders earlier stated that the PVV party would no longer be part of the government, effectively causing the collapse of the fragile coalition and paving the way for new elections.
According to Wilders, coalition partners refused to accept his proposals on migration and asylum policies — a key issue for which he had sought support over the past week.
“No signatures for our asylum plans. PVV is leaving the coalition,” Wilders wrote on the social media platform X.
The sudden departure of Wilders brings an end to a coalition that struggled since its formation in July last year, facing difficulties in reaching consensus on several critical issues.
