The European Union has presented its defense spending plans through a new document titled “White Paper for European Defence – Readiness 2030”, which aims to address both the immediate security needs for Ukraine and the long-term defense challenges facing Europe.
In a joint press briefing in Brussels, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas and EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius outlined key action areas to address urgent defense issues, including bolstering the EU’s military readiness and supporting Ukraine.
The White Paper highlights several critical areas for action:

- Supporting the European Defense Industry: By increasing collective demand and expanding cooperative procurement.
- Strengthening Ukraine’s Defense: Through increased military aid and deeper integration between European and Ukrainian defense industries.
- Enhancing the EU Defense Market: Simplifying regulations and deepening the internal defense market across the EU.
- Accelerating Defense Transformation: Using innovations like AI and quantum technology.
- Increasing EU Readiness: Improving military mobility and strengthening border security, particularly along the land border with Russia and Belarus.
- Strengthening Global Partnerships: Building alliances with like-minded countries worldwide.
The EU emphasized its commitment to securing Europe’s defense future, especially in the wake of geopolitical tensions and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
