The European Union has warned of the rapid imposition of new sanctions against officials responsible for “suppressing” anti-government protests in Iran, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated.

In a post on X, von der Leyen described the number of casualties during the protests as shocking and condemned the “excessive use of force and ongoing restrictions on citizens’ rights” in Iran.

She emphasized that, in coordination with European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas, “additional sanctions will be proposed quickly against those responsible for the repression.”

“We stand with the people of Iran, who are bravely marching for their freedom,” von der Leyen added.
