The facility in North Mitrovica, where the Serbian Health Insurance Fund and the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund operated under the Serbian system, was temporarily closed today (12.09.2025) by the Municipality of North Mitrovica.
According to municipal officials, employees were found working with invalid documentation, and the closure was carried out with the assistance of the Kosovo Police.
Visar Syla, Chief of Cabinet to the Mayor of North Mitrovica, Erden Atiq, told KALLXO.com that the activity has been suspended temporarily, with further procedures to follow in accordance with laws and legal competencies.
“The premises where the so-called PIO and the health insurance card center operated have been inspected. During the control, it was confirmed that the individuals found inside did not possess valid documentation to conduct such activities,” Syla explained.
Veton Elshani, Deputy Director of the Mitrovica North Regional Directorate, said that no arrests were made after the closure of the facility located near the “Three Towers” area.
This is not the first closure of Serbian parallel institutions in North Mitrovica this week. On Tuesday, September 9, the municipality shut down another facility hosting the Official Gazette of Serbia’s office and a bookstore, where employees also lacked valid documentation.
The Serbian Government’s Office for Kosovo reacted, accusing the Kosovo Police of “seizing and closing the offices of the Official Gazette, obstructing the regular supply of Serbian schools and students with textbooks and teaching materials.”
Since early 2024, Kosovo authorities have intensified efforts to close down institutions operating under the Serbian system, labeling them as illegal and parallel structures. These closures have included the Serbian Post Office, the Postal Savings Bank, temporary municipal bodies, and social work centers.
