Polls from Germany for the European Parliament elections show that the conservative alliance CDU/CSU has emerged as a clear winner with 29.5-30% of the votes, giving them a decisive lead over other parties.
The Greens appear to have performed poorly, showing only 12-12.5% of the votes, compared to 20.5% in 2019, when they had the second strongest result.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has made significant gains, with initial poll results indicating they are on track to secure 16-16.5%, compared to 11% five years ago, reports The Guardian.
This would place them ahead of the Social Democrats (SPD), who are currently estimated to have received 14%, even worse than their historically poor result in 2019.
The European elections are the first voting test for the newly formed BSW party of Sahra Wagenknecht, and from this steady start, they have managed to secure 5.5-6%, putting them on par with the pro-business FDP.
