Tens of thousands of Palestinians have begun heading back to northern Gaza after the Israeli military confirmed that a ceasefire agreement had officially come into effect.
The Israeli offensive in Gaza, launched after the Hamas attack on October 7, forced around one million Palestinians to flee from the northern part of the territory.
Months of Israeli bombardments have left most of northern Gaza in ruins, with large areas partially uninhabitable.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to deliver a speech following the entry into force of the ceasefire at 12:00 p.m. local time (11:00 GMT).
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera’s Tareq Azzoum reported from Gaza City, describing the scene as “an endless tide of humans” — thousands of displaced Palestinians walking home as Israeli troops withdraw.
