Authorities in Los Angeles County have issued evacuation orders for an area approximately 60 kilometers north of the city due to a new fire that erupted near Castaic Lake.

The flames are burning through the hills surrounding the reservoir and have spread rapidly, covering an area of over 20 square kilometers in just two and a half hours.

Nearly 20,000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes.

The affected area is not heavily populated, but the Santa Ana winds are pushing the flames southward, into an area that is now under evacuation and appears to be covered in a thick cloud of smoke.

Castaic is located about 25 kilometers northwest of Santa Clarita and borders the Angeles National Forest. From a population of 31,000 residents, thousands have been ordered to evacuate, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

The region is once again under a red flag warning, indicating a high fire risk due to strong winds and dry conditions with low humidity levels.
