A drone launched from Yemen by the Houthi militant group struck Ramon International Airport near the southern Israeli city of Eilat, forcing the suspension of flights and temporary closure of the airspace, the Israeli military confirmed on Sunday.
According to the Israel Airports Authority, the drone directly hit the passenger terminal, leaving one person lightly injured, as confirmed by Israel’s emergency services Magen David Adom.
The Israeli army reported that the Houthis launched multiple drones, several of which were intercepted outside Israeli territory, while at least one drone successfully reached its target.
This latest strike comes two weeks after an Israeli attack in Sanaa, the Houthi-controlled capital of Yemen, that killed Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi along with several ministers. Al-Rahawi was the highest-ranking rebel official killed since the start of the joint Israeli-American campaign in the region.
It is not the first Houthi strike on Israeli airports. In May, a Houthi-fired rocket hit near Israel’s main airport, injuring four people and forcing many airlines to suspend flights for months. In retaliation, Israel bombed and destroyed Sanaa’s main airport.
