The Parliament of Hungary has approved a resolution opposing the membership of Ukraine in the European Union and further financing of Ukraine’s military needs using EU member states’ funds.

A total of 142 members of parliament voted in favor, 28 voted against, while four abstained.

According to the document, Hungary opposes Ukraine’s accession to the EU, arguing that the country is currently at war and does not meet the criteria for membership, reports Kyiv Independent.

The resolution calls on the Hungarian government not to support the start of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. It also demands halting the sending of money or weapons to Ukraine and urges efforts to prevent the redistribution of European funds intended for Hungary to support Kyiv.

The authors of the resolution argue that Ukraine’s share of financing the EU’s next seven-year budget could reach up to €360 billion, partly due to reductions in agricultural subsidies.

The resolution also welcomes the government’s proposal to conduct a nationwide consultation among the population regarding continued financial support for Ukraine.

Furthermore, the document calls on the Hungarian government to take all necessary measures to prevent the continuation of EU policies supporting Ukraine in the war, as well as to avoid what it describes as “dragging Hungary and the EU into the Russia-Ukraine war.”

Last month, Hungary also blocked the approval of the EU’s 20th sanctions package against Russia and obstructed €90 billion in EU loans for Ukraine, demanding the continuation of Russian oil supplies.
