Kosovo’s Special Prosecution Office has filed an indictment with the Basic Court in Prishtina against A.D. for the alleged criminal offenses of “war crimes against the civilian population” and unauthorized possession, control or ownership of weapons.
According to the indictment, on March 9, 1999, in the village of Ivajë and surrounding villages in the Kaçanik area, A.D., who was serving as a police officer at the Kaçanik Police Station, allegedly acted together with other unidentified members of Serbian police and military forces. The prosecution alleges that they committed acts including torture, inhumane treatment, intimidation, destruction of property and the forced displacement of Kosovo Albanian civilians.
According to the indictment, the forces first surrounded Ivajë and then forced residents to leave their homes, which were allegedly burned and destroyed. Men were separated from women and taken to the police station in Kaçanik. While 78 men were later released, 13 were detained for questioning and allegedly beaten and tortured by A.D. and other unidentified individuals.
The case has been submitted to the Special Department of the Basic Court in Prishtina for review. The defendant is currently in custody.
