A Israeli airstrike in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis has killed Salah al-Bardaweel, a senior Hamas leader, along with his wife. The strike targeted Bardaweel, a key member of Hamas’ political bureau, in what marks an escalation of the ongoing conflict.

Casualties from Escalating Violence

At least 18 people have been reported dead in Khan Younis and nearby Rafah as a result of the airstrikes, with many others wounded.

Israeli authorities have yet to comment on the attack, but the airstrike follows a resumption of heavy military operations by Israel in Gaza, ending nearly two months of ceasefire.

Tensions Rise as Ceasefire Collapses

The recent airstrike occurred after Hamas rejected a new U.S. proposal for an extended ceasefire, while Israel accused Hamas of abandoning a Qatari-Egyptian-U.S.-brokered agreement. This agreement aimed to secure a military withdrawal, the release of Israeli and Palestinian prisoners, and a roadmap to end the war and rebuild Gaza.

Hamas Condemns Attack

In a statement, Hamas claimed that Bardaweel and his wife were praying in their tent when a rocket struck, killing them both. His death adds to a growing list of Hamas leaders targeted since Israel resumed its military campaign in Gaza earlier this week.
