Alicia Kearns, the British MP, shared a video on X from her speech at the Council of Europe, where she called for Serbian citizens to have “free elections, a free press, and a democracy free from corruption and state capture.”
“Europe must not look the other way while democratic freedoms are being dismantled,” she wrote alongside the video.
Referring to the tragedy in Novi Sad, Kearns highlighted the mass protests that followed, noting that four million people took to the streets.
She also raised concerns about media freedom in Serbia, emphasizing that a free press is one of the fundamental pillars of democracy.
According to the British lawmaker, independent journalism in Serbia is being “deliberately dismantled in plain sight.”
“Independent newsrooms have seen their leaders removed. N1, Nova S, and Danas have been sold to a company linked to Orbán and Vučić,” Kearns stated.
She further drew comparisons between Serbia and Russia, while also referencing the terrorist attack in Banjska and warning about Serbia’s actions and ambitions toward its neighboring countries.
