The director of the ESI Institute, Gerald Knaus, said that Serbia’s actions to escalate the situation are being done in order to postpone the vote on Kosovo’s application to the Council of Europe at the meeting of the Committee of Ministers.

“Yes. Violence by threat. And: This escalation has a single purpose: To encourage Germany, France and the United Kingdom to postpone the vote for Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe. By doing this, it diverts attention from the strong message coming from 3/4 of the members of AKP: that Kosovo is now ready to join the Council of Europe. Will escalation work? Will the vote be postponed? If it works, it risks being a very violent summer in 2024 in the Balkans,” he said.

The EU and the ambassadors of the USA and Germany have reacted to the actions of Serbia against the citizens of Kosovo, asking it to calm down the situation.
