The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, Igli Hasani, during a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, stated that Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe should happen as soon as possible.
The Albanian Foreign Minister and the senior Council of Europe official discussed Albania’s integration, strengthening democracy, the rule of law, and support for Ukraine.
“I am pleased to welcome today the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr. Alain Berset, a visit that is especially symbolic as 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Albania’s membership in the Council of Europe. During the meeting, we assessed Albania’s progress in strengthening democracy, the rule of law, human rights, as well as its active role in international organizations and its support for Ukraine.”
“I also took the opportunity to emphasize to Mr. Berset that Kosovo’s deserved membership in the Council of Europe should happen as soon as possible. Albania remains unwavering in its support for Kosovo, seeing it as a key point for regional stability and the promotion of democracy and human rights,” said Hasani, as reported by Rtsh.
The Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Elisa Spiropali, also met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, who is on an official visit to Tirana. Present at the meeting were members of the Parliament’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, including deputies Klotilda Bushka, Etilda Gjonaj, Albana Vokshi, as well as Albania’s Ambassador to the Council of Europe, Dastid Koreshi.
Chairwoman Spiropali and Secretary General Berset discussed the cooperation between the Albanian Parliament and this major European organization over the 30 years of Albania’s membership and the country’s contribution to the Council of Europe, as well as the active role of the Parliament’s delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly.
They also discussed the support of the Council of Europe and Albania’s achievements in the rule of law, the respect and implementation of human rights, the strengthening of democratic institutions and values, advancing reforms toward EU membership, cooperation in international multilateral organizations, and the country’s strong support for Ukraine.
Chairwoman Spiropali conveyed to Secretary General Berset Albania’s request for Kosovo, this new and vibrant democracy, to be accepted as soon as possible into the Council of Europe, as a factor for cooperation, security, and peace in the region.
