Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti held a meeting with lawmakers representing Kosovo’s non-majority communities on Wednesday evening, as political parties continue efforts to resolve the country’s institutional deadlock over the election of a new president.
The meeting was confirmed by Emilja Rexhepi, who posted a photograph on Facebook showing herself with Kurti and other community MPs.
“Let’s move forward,” Rexhepi wrote alongside the photograph.
Kurti’s meeting with community representatives came shortly after his talks with Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) leader Lumir Abdixhiku, which focused on the unresolved issue of electing Kosovo’s next president.
The meetings come amid continued political efforts to secure the parliamentary votes required to elect a president and prevent the country from entering another electoral cycle.
Community MPs could play an important role in the process, given the narrow parliamentary numbers and the requirement to secure sufficient support for a presidential candidate.
Kurti and Abdixhiku have continued discussions on finding a political solution, while the lack of sufficient votes has raised the prospect of further political uncertainty and potentially new parliamentary elections.
