Kosovo’s Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, has commented on the country’s latest political developments, including the election of a new president and proposed amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers.
Kusari-Lila said both issues should be resolved by October 6, when the deadline for electing Kosovo’s president expires.
She said political parties should reach a consensus on the presidential election in order to avoid another round of parliamentary elections, arguing that it is in Kosovo’s interest to prevent new elections under the current circumstances.
“By October 6, there should be an agreement on the president, as well as on the adoption of the draft law and the necessary actions for defense in The Hague,” Kusari-Lila said.
She added that the government should respond to the draft legislation once it is considered by the Assembly and stressed that its provisions should be examined thoroughly.
“I have not seen the draft myself. However, it is very important that it be reviewed substantively, that all possibilities are examined, and that it proceeds as soon as possible,” she said.
Kusari-Lila also said that achieving justice in The Hague and securing the release of former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders should be considered a shared interest.
The proposed amendments to the legislation governing the Kosovo Specialist Chambers have become a subject of political debate, particularly regarding the future handling of war-crimes cases and Kosovo’s international obligations.
