German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of waging a “hybrid war” against Germany.
“He is conducting an information war against us. He is waging a military war against Ukraine, and this war is aimed at all of us,” Merz told German broadcaster NTV on October 6.
Merz stated that Putin seeks to overturn Europe’s political order, underscoring Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine as part of defending open and liberal societies in Europe.
When asked directly whether Russia is targeting Germany, Merz replied:
“He is conducting a hybrid war against all of us.”
Regarding the recent increase in drone incidents in Germany and across Europe, Merz confirmed that authorities recognize the threat, adding that Putin aims to spread fear.
“We will not be intimidated and will effectively defend ourselves against this threat,” Merz emphasized.
On the possibility of summoning Putin for dialogue, Merz said it is under consideration, but he warned:
“Any attempt to negotiate with him at this moment ends with even harsher attacks on Ukraine.”
Germany remains the second-largest global supporter of Ukraine after the United States, providing substantial military assistance since Russia’s unprovoked invasion in February 2022.
