Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, said her government aims to avoid imposing reciprocal tariffs on the United States, despite former President Donald Trump’s broad tariff plans.
Trump has insisted that foreign governments would be forced to “pay a lot of money” to remove trade taxes if he returns to office.
Speaking at a press conference, Sheinbaum announced that Mexico’s Economy Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, will continue negotiations with U.S. officials in Washington.
“We want to avoid setting reciprocal tariffs. We do not rule it out as a possibility, but we prefer to continue talks,” Sheinbaum said.
Mexico has so far escaped Trump’s proposed minimum 10% tariff on imports from most countries. However, it remains affected by the 25% tariff imposed on imported cars into the United States.
