Montenegro’s Ministry of Transport has ordered the Road Inspectorate to investigate the placement of a controversial road sign in Plav, where the city of Peja—located in Kosovo—was incorrectly marked as part of Serbia, officials confirmed to Radio Free Europe.

The sign was removed on April 6, but it remains unclear when exactly it was installed.

The Ministry did not clarify who authorized the installation or the subsequent removal of the disputed sign in Murinë, a village in the Municipality of Plav, northern Montenegro, near the Montenegrin-Kosovar border.

“The Directorate of Transport is responsible for placing road signs along national and regional roads. The Ministry is aware of the case and has instructed the Inspectorate to conduct a field investigation and act according to the factual situation and the law,” the Ministry said in a statement.

A photograph of the road sign circulated widely on social media on Sunday. It was also shared by Kaltrina Hoti, an artist from Plav.
