One Dead, Eight Injured in Crowd Crush During World Cup Match Viewing in Jordan

One person has died and eight others were injured following a crowd crush during a public gathering in central Amman where fans had assembled to watch Jordan’s World Cup match against Algeria on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred in Hashemite Square, where a large number of spectators had gathered to follow the match, which Jordan lost 2–1 to Algeria.

According to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, emergency teams transported nine people to hospital after the large crowd and sudden movement within the gathering caused a crush among spectators. One of the injured later died from their injuries.

Authorities stated that a medical examination will determine the exact cause of death.

Large crowds have regularly gathered across Jordan to watch the national team’s matches, as the country is participating in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history.

Officials have not yet released further details regarding the circumstances that led to the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
