Montenegro’s Minister of Human and Minority Rights, Fatmir Gjeka, has stated that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is seeking to radicalize the Serbian community in Montenegro.
According to Gjeka, one of the main reasons behind the attacks and political pressure coming from Belgrade is Serbia’s desire to obstruct Montenegro’s path toward European integration.
“In my opinion, there are several reasons. First, it is an attempt to divert attention from the major problems the Serbian leadership is facing within Serbia itself. Second, it is an effort to hinder Montenegro on its European path. And third, it is an attempt to radicalize the Serbs in Montenegro. I believe that on none of these fronts is official Belgrade succeeding in imposing its game,” Gjeka stated.
The Montenegrin minister was also asked whether Montenegro is capable of resisting such pressure and influence.
“I am convinced that it can. Time is now our ally. I am not sure the same can be said for the regime in Belgrade,” Gjeka said in an interview with Portal ETV.
His remarks come amid ongoing political tensions between Montenegro and Serbia, as Podgorica continues its efforts to advance its European Union integration agenda while facing criticism and pressure from Belgrade.
