The Mitrovica Bridge, often referred to as the “bridge that divides the north and south,” is a term that conveys an idea of division and tension, which is not found in other parts of the world, even in those with greater divisions. In Zurich, where I live, there are several large bridges – more than 30 – but none of them are called “the bridge that divides the north and south” or “the east and west.” This shows that the term “dividing bridge” in Mitrovica is deliberate and used to fuel divisions, which are of interest to hostile circles against Kosovo.

Why should we continue to use a term that serves division and discord? This language of division, often reinforced by media funded by hostile states, does not reflect the reality and aspirations of the citizens of Kosovo. The reality is that Mitrovica, as a whole city, is within the territory of Kosovo and is administered by its institutions. The opening of the bridge is not a matter of an international border but an internal action that should be considered normal and natural.

Media that spread panic about the opening of the bridge are trying to create unnecessary tensions. In reality, the majority of Serbian citizens in the northern part of Mitrovica support the opening of the bridge because it will also ease their movement and access to other parts of the city. The opening of the bridge would be a positive step for all citizens of Mitrovica, strengthening coexistence and democracy in the country.

Instead of viewing the bridge’s opening as a problematic issue, we should see it as an opportunity to demonstrate that Kosovo is ready for the normalization and full integration of all its parts. This is not an issue where Kosovo has anything to lose; on the contrary, it is an opportunity where our country only stands to gain – from peace and stability.

The opening of the bridge is not just an infrastructure issue but a step toward a more united and prosperous future for Kosovo. Recently, there have been reports that the bridge’s opening endangers American soldiers. But this is not true, as it is well known that Kosovo’s border is not at the Ibër Bridge in Mitrovica. The Serbian army has no chance of entering Kosovo’s territory, and if it attempted to do so, it would face our state special forces and KFOR.

In fact, the opening of the Ibër Bridge does not endanger American soldiers; it threatens Vučić’s and Rama’s advisor’s plan to divide northern Kosovo! Therefore, the opening of the bridge is an opportunity where Kosovo only stands to gain – not only in terms of free movement and unity but also in the protection of its sovereignty.
