Prosecutors in Paris have opened two new criminal investigations into alleged sexual abuse crimes and financial misconduct connected to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, following the release of millions of previously undisclosed documents.
According to Associated Press, the investigations were confirmed by Paris prosecutor Laurence Beccuau, who stated that authorities aim to analyze newly released materials alongside fresh complaints and media reports.
Investigations Focus on Abuse and Financial Crimes
Beccuau explained that two separate probes have been initiated:
- One focusing on allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation
- Another examining potential financial wrongdoing
Both investigations will involve specialized magistrates tasked with reviewing extensive documentation released by the U.S. Department of Justice, including more than three million pages of files, videos, and photographs linked to Epstein’s activities.
Beccuau stressed that the newly released materials could provide investigators with a broader and more comprehensive understanding of the network surrounding Epstein. She also urged victims who have not previously come forward to submit complaints or witness testimony, warning that the publication of new evidence could reactivate trauma among survivors.
Revisiting Previous Investigations
French prosecutors are also reviewing earlier cases in light of the newly disclosed evidence. Among them is the investigation involving Jean-Luc Brunel, who was accused of rape and sex trafficking involving minors. Brunel, considered a key figure in Epstein’s alleged exploitation network, was found dead in a Paris prison cell in 2022, leading to the closure of the case at the time.
Authorities noted that Epstein frequently traveled to France and maintained residential properties in Paris, raising further jurisdictional questions for French investigators.
High-Profile Political Fallout
The newly released files have also triggered scrutiny of prominent figures in France. Former Culture Minister Jack Lang recently resigned from his leadership role at the Arab World Institute following allegations related to tax fraud.
France’s financial prosecutors have launched a separate investigation into alleged connections between Lang, his daughter Caroline Lang, and Epstein through an offshore company reportedly registered in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Background on Epstein Case
Epstein, a wealthy financier with international connections, was arrested on sex trafficking charges and died in U.S. federal custody in 2019. His death, officially ruled a suicide, left multiple investigations into his associates and alleged trafficking network ongoing across several countries.
French authorities say the newly opened probes represent a renewed effort to uncover the full extent of Epstein’s operations and hold any collaborators accountable.
