Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated that Europe urgently needs its own plan for Ukraine and its security.
In a post on the social platform X, Prime Minister Tusk emphasized that “there is no time to lose.”
“Europe urgently needs its own action plan for Ukraine and our security, otherwise other global players will decide our future. Not necessarily in line with our interests. This plan must be prepared now,” Tusk wrote.
The comments of the Polish Prime Minister echo those of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who at the Munich Security Conference stated that Europe must “become self-sufficient and united in the face of common challenges.”
“We cannot rule out the possibility that America might say ‘no’ to Europe. Many leaders have spoken here about the need for a common European army. And I deeply believe that the time has come for this to happen,” Zelenskyy said.
Recent moves by U.S. President Donald Trump have raised concerns among European leaders that decisions about the war in Ukraine could be made without the involvement of the European Union (EU) and possibly even Kyiv.
Last year, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called for EU sanctions against Russia and a 5,000-strong EU mechanized brigade. Poland is spending 4% of its GDP on defense. Sikorski emphasized that other NATO members should also reach this percentage.
