Pope Francis is in critical condition following a severe respiratory crisis while being treated for pneumonia and a lung infection, the Vatican announced late Saturday.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized for over a week at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, experienced “an asthma-like respiratory crisis of prolonged intensity” and required high-flow oxygen to assist his breathing. Doctors also administered blood transfusions due to thrombocytopenia—low platelet levels—associated with anemia, according to the Vatican’s statement.
“The pope is not out of danger,” officials confirmed, adding that while he remains alert, his condition is still critical, and the prognosis remains uncertain.
Pope Francis, who had part of a lung removed in his youth, has been forced to cancel public appearances, including his traditional Sunday prayer for the second consecutive week.
His health struggles have raised concerns about the future leadership of the Catholic Church, as Vatican officials monitor his condition closely.
