U.S. President Donald Trump stated that peace in Ukraine is “closer than ever,” following what he described as a very positive conversation with European leaders, during a ceremony at the Oval Office.
According to President Trump, there is broad European support for ending the war, while both Russia and Ukraine—at least at this stage—are expressing a willingness to bring the conflict to a close.
Intensive Talks in Berlin
Trump’s remarks come at a time when intensive negotiations are underway in Berlin between the United States, Ukraine, and European partners. Although the American side has indicated that approximately 90 percent of the issues have been agreed upon, the most difficult sticking point remains territorial questions, particularly the Donbas region.
In Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised President Trump’s role in creating a positive climate for negotiations, stating that without his involvement, this moment of progress would not have been possible. Merz also emphasized the importance of U.S. envoys and expressed hope for further advances in the talks.
Ukraine’s Position: Security First
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that the negotiations are “painful,” especially regarding territorial issues, but described them as necessary. He insisted that strong security guarantees are a prerequisite for any agreement, stressing that Ukraine needs clarity on security before considering territorial matters.
European Leaders: Cautious Optimism
A joint statement by European leaders present in Berlin welcomed the “significant progress” achieved so far, while underscoring that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.” The document highlights the need for robust security guarantees, continued military and economic support for Ukraine, and respect for the principle that international borders cannot be changed by force.
Territory Remains the Main Obstacle
Despite the optimism, diplomatic sources report that the United States is pressuring Ukraine to withdraw troops from parts of the Donetsk region, a key demand of Russia. This makes territorial control the central obstacle to a final peace agreement.
A Delicate Path Forward
While President Trump has voiced strong optimism, European leaders and Ukraine remain cautious, emphasizing that the negotiations are still in a delicate phase and that a lasting peace will require difficult compromises and credible guarantees.
