James Rubin explained why he refused to be a witness for the Prosecution in the trial of Hashim Thaçi and others, citing his views on the Kosovo Specialist Chambers.
He described as unfair the five-year pre-trial detention of the accused, who, according to him, had surrendered voluntarily.
“They voluntarily surrendered and cooperated with the Prosecution. I don’t understand why they stayed in jail for so long; this concerns me,” he said.
According to Rubin, this is not consistent with the rule of law, and he noted that Madeleine Albright did not intend this when establishing the Hague Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
“This was wrong; this is not justice,” he added.
“To me, it appeared as political targeting because Hashim Thaçi had been a KLA leader.”
