Russian authorities have declared a state of emergency in the Kursk region, which has been occupied by Ukrainian forces since March. Acting regional commander Alexei Smirnov explained that the measure is necessary “to limit the effects of the hostile occupation in the area.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine has ordered the evacuation of around 6,000 people from Ukrainian border areas near Russia’s Kursk region.
Moscow earlier today announced that it was engaged in fierce fighting against Ukrainian forces that have occupied Russia’s Kursk region in one of the largest incursions into Russian territory since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk was a major provocation, and the Russian Ministry of Defense labeled Ukraine’s attack on Kursk as another “terrorist and provocative” assault on civilians.
