Russian forces carried out a series of attacks across Ukraine on Monday, killing civilians and injuring dozens of people in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Dnipro, Ukrainian authorities said.
In central Kyiv, a Russian drone struck the National Academy of Sciences, sparking a fire in the historic building. At least one person was killed and 19 others were injured, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Six of those injured were receiving hospital treatment.
Rescue teams worked at the scene as smoke rose from the damaged building, searching the area and extinguishing fires. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks and said rescue operations were continuing.
“Every one of Ukraine’s partners must see from this terror, from these strikes, that supporting Ukraine means truly supporting people’s lives,” Zelenskyy said in a statement.
Azerbaijani Citizen Among Those Killed
Zelenskyy said two people had been killed in attacks in the Kyiv region, including an Azerbaijani citizen. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the death and said its embassy in Kyiv was providing consular assistance with the repatriation of the victim’s remains.
The attacks also damaged residential and other civilian infrastructure in the capital. Ukrainian authorities reported that a number of sites, including homes and commercial facilities, were affected.
Kharkiv Apartment Building Hit
In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, a guided Russian aerial bomb struck a multi-storey residential building, injuring at least 22 people, including children, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.
The attack damaged apartments and shattered windows across the building. Emergency services conducted search-and-rescue operations and later reported that no one remained trapped under the rubble.
Residents described the impact of the strike and the damage to their homes, while municipal services worked to clear debris and secure damaged buildings.
Three Killed in Dnipro
In the southeastern city of Dnipro, a Russian drone attack struck a business centre in the middle of the working day, killing three people and injuring at least 12 others, regional authorities said.
Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said the building was located in the centre of the city, surrounded by residential areas, offices and other public facilities.
“These people’s lives were cut short by the enemy attack,” Hanzha said in a statement accompanying photographs of the aftermath.
The latest attacks came amid an intensified Russian aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities. Reuters reported that Russia has increasingly used faster, high-flying jet-powered drones, which have placed additional pressure on Ukraine’s air-defence systems.
Russia has said it targets Ukrainian military and strategic infrastructure, while Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly reported damage to residential buildings and other civilian facilities. Both sides deny deliberately targeting civilians.
