Since former Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri joined Basel in August of last year, viewership in Swiss football stadiums has seen an increase. Basel, in particular, has experienced a notable rise in attendance.
In the current season, nearly 4,000 more spectators are attending Basel’s home matches. On average, 26,000 viewers now watch Basel play.
“That’s 17% more than last season,” reports SRF.
The number of season tickets sold by Basel has also increased by 10%. Approximately 16,500 season tickets have been sold for the 2024/2025 season, compared to 15,000 in the previous season. Basel’s president, David Degen, confirms the “Shaqiri effect.”
In Zurich, during the Zurich vs. Basel match, a record number of 22,000 spectators attended the derby, which Basel won 1-0. Basel’s captain assisted in the winning goal.
