Following a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Slovakia now supports Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
Although Fico, previously known as an ally of Vladimir Putin, noted that Slovakia cannot offer security guarantees, he expressed strong support for Zelensky’s initiatives and proposed peace formula.
Fico also emphasized his desire for friendly and strengthened bilateral relations between Slovakia and Ukraine, describing their ties as an example of effective cooperation despite political differences.
This marks a significant shift for Ukraine, which has been seeking robust European backing for its integration. Slovakia, along with Hungary, had previously opposed Ukraine’s EU and NATO membership.
The change in Fico’s position comes shortly after Putin stated publicly that Moscow does not oppose Ukraine’s potential EU membership, though he reiterated that NATO accession remains unacceptable during a meeting with Fico in China.
