South Korea’s opposition lawmakers have initiated impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law.
The country woke up to an uncertain reality on Wednesday after unprecedented scenes unfolded, with Yoon suddenly attempting to implement martial law. 190 lawmakers had gathered to vote on it, but six hours later, the decision was unexpectedly reversed, as reported by BBC and RKS.News.
Following the presentation of the impeachment motion, South Korea’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party, condemned Yoon’s initial declaration of martial law as “rebellious behavior.”
The parliament will have to vote on whether to impeach Yoon by Saturday.
