The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has stated that the European Union and the United States of America are being too soft towards Serbia, adding that they should give it an ultimatum to impose sanctions on Russia.
In an interview for “Financial Times”, Kurti emphasized that Belgrade should align itself with the West to offer Kosovo security in the process of normalizing relations.
“As soon as Serbia imposes sanctions on the Russian Federation, then it would be a moment when they can show that they want to integrate into the EU, and Serbia without Russia cannot threaten the security of the continent. Then I could believe that they basically want peace. And the USA and the EU would not try to calm them down anymore”, said Kurti.
He said that Serbia should show its commitment to EU integration by imposing sanctions on Russia and stop trying to sit on “three or four stools”.
Prime Minister Kurti has refused to say whether the Kosovo Police will withdraw the special units from the north, but has insisted that the Serbs’ complaints about their presence are diminishing.
Last week, Kosovo police raided several branches of a Serbian bank in the north of the country and confiscated Serbian currency. The dinar was outlawed as a medium of exchange in Kosovo earlier this year, even though many Kosovo Serbs are paid salaries or pensions in that currency. Kosovo uses the euro.
Kurti also emphasized that there are strategic differences with the Euro-American allies, but not in values and principles.
