Today marks the legal deadline for the election of the President of the Republic of Kosovo.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Albulena Haxhiu, announced yesterday that only one presidential candidacy has been formally submitted so far.

According to her statement, the candidacy of Glauk Konjufca was submitted with the signatures of 30 MPs, including members of the parliamentary group of Vetëvendosje and representatives from the multiethnic group.

“In my capacity as Speaker of the Assembly, I have received only one presidential nomination proposed by 30 members of parliament. According to the official documentation, several MPs from the Vetëvendosje parliamentary group and some from the multiethnic group have nominated Mr. Glauk Konjufca,” Haxhiu said during a press conference.

However, she emphasized that the voting process cannot begin unless there are at least two candidates supported by the required number of signatures.

“Until we have at least two candidates who have secured the necessary support, I cannot call a session for the election of the president,” she added.

Under the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo, this issue is regulated by Article 86, which states that:

“The election of the President of the Republic of Kosovo must take place no later than thirty (30) days before the end of the mandate of the current president.”

If the Assembly fails to elect a president within the constitutional deadline, the country could face a serious institutional crisis that may lead to early elections.
