Donald Trump has signed an order to reinstate the federal death penalty, reversing the 2021 moratorium imposed by Joe Biden.
The president also ordered the Attorney General to implement the death penalty “regardless of other factors” when a case involves the murder of an officer or capital crimes “committed by foreigners illegally present in the country,” and to “take all necessary and legal actions” to ensure that states have enough lethal injection drugs.
It is important to note that only three defendants remain on death row, as Biden commuted 37 death sentences to life imprisonment.
As announced before taking office, Trump also signed a decree temporarily suspending all U.S. foreign aid programs for 90 days, pending reviews to determine whether they align with U.S. policy objectives. Trump also initiated the proverbial “cleaning house,” announcing that he intended to remove over a thousand appointees from the previous administration.
“My Presidential Personnel Office is actively engaged in identifying and removing over a thousand presidential appointees from the previous administration who are not aligned with our vision to Make America Great Again,” Trump said in a statement.
