U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States is engaged in “high-level” talks with Iran regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, expressing that the negotiations are “in the best interest of Iran.”
Trump has repeatedly threatened military action against Tehran if an agreement is not reached, while Iran had previously ruled out the possibility of direct negotiations with Washington, but expressed openness to indirect talks.
While awaiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump told reporters at the White House that, in the meantime, Iran had agreed to engage in direct talks.
“We are having direct talks with Iran, and they have started. They will continue on Saturday. We are in a very big meeting, and we will see what happens. I think everyone agrees that making a deal would be preferable to the obvious, and the obvious is not something I want to get involved with,” Trump said.
“Now we are dealing with them directly. And maybe a deal will be made, that would be wonderful, it would really be wonderful for Iran,” he added.
