U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced a new condition for potential negotiations with Iran, demanding that Tehran compensate people who, according to him, were killed or wounded in Iranian attacks.
Trump’s remarks came after Iran demanded that the United States compensate it for damages caused during the conflict, linking the issue to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described Iran’s demand for compensation as an “interesting idea,” adding that the United States would also seek compensation from Tehran.
Trump said he had instructed U.S. representatives to include compensation for those killed or injured by Iran in various conflicts as part of any future negotiations.
He specifically referred to the families of victims of the USS Cole attack, as well as thousands of others killed in fighting, including during operations associated with Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
Trump also called for compensation for the families of what he described as hundreds of thousands of innocent protesters killed by Iranian authorities over the past 50 years. He additionally cited a figure of 52,000 people allegedly killed during the past five months.
“I have instructed my representatives to include this in every future negotiation,” Trump wrote, signaling that compensation could become another major obstacle in any renewed talks between Washington and Tehran.
