The United Kingdom faces a pivotal decision in aligning its trade and economic policies between the European Union and the United States, particularly with Donald Trump’s potential impact looming. Former World Trade Organization (WTO) chief Pascal Lamy emphasized the UK’s stronger economic ties with the EU, citing that Britain trades three times more with Europe than with the US.

Stephen Moore, a Trump ally, urged the UK to distance itself from the “socialist model” of the EU if it wants a free trade agreement with the US under Trump. This comes as fears of a global trade war escalate.

Lamy argued that the UK’s socio-economic model is more aligned with Europe’s and warned that adopting US standards would be a drastic shift. Ivan Rogers, the UK’s former ambassador to the EU, echoed these concerns, noting that any potential Trump trade deal would come with significant demands for US access to UK agriculture and veterinary standards.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to the G20 summit in Brazil will focus on global security and economic growth, with strategic talks expected, including with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The US is reportedly planning steep tariffs on Chinese imports, which could pressure the UK and EU to align.

The UK government is prioritizing trade strategy in this shifting global landscape, with experts suggesting a pragmatic approach. João Vale de Almeida, former EU ambassador to London, highlighted the possibility of limited yet pragmatic agreements with both the EU and the US, despite Trump’s divisive tactics.
