Negotiations for a ceasefire in Ukraine are scheduled to begin on Sunday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, according to U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff. His statement followed a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Witkoff revealed that Moscow has already agreed to key points of the proposed ceasefire, which include protecting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and halting hostilities in the Black Sea.
“I believe the Russians have accepted both of these points,” he told Fox News, adding that he remains optimistic that Ukraine will also agree.
Ceasefire Agreement and Diplomatic Uncertainty
Although both leaders reportedly agreed to a partial ceasefire focusing on energy infrastructure, Witkoff clarified that the deal extends beyond just energy concerns.
“It involves energy and infrastructure in general,” he explained.
U.S. Delegation to Lead Talks in Saudi Arabia
The U.S. delegation attending the talks in Jeddah will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House National Security Advisor Mike Walz. However, Witkoff did not disclose who their counterparts would be in the discussions.
With tensions still high and skepticism surrounding Russia’s true intentions, the upcoming negotiations could mark a turning point—if all parties are willing to commit to a meaningful ceasefire.
