The United States has announced it will veto any amendments to its United Nations resolution calling for an end to the war in Ukraine, a U.S. State Department official said ahead of today’s vote. This includes amendments proposed by Russia as well as those from European allies.

“We will veto a Russian amendment if submitted to the Security Council. We will also veto European amendments if they are proposed,” the official told reporters.

The UN is set to mark the third anniversary of the Ukraine war with calls for peace, but diplomatic tensions remain high over whether the vote will proceed on the U.S.-backed resolution or the competing Ukrainian-EU proposal.

While the Ukrainian resolution explicitly demands the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Russian forces, the U.S. draft avoids mentioning Russia’s invasion or Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Instead, it expresses “regret over the tragic loss of life” and urges a “swift resolution of the conflict.”

The U.S. is pressuring the UN General Assembly to support its proposal without amendments and to reject voting on the Ukrainian-backed resolution. Despite this, Ukraine remains firm in keeping its draft on the table.

As the diplomatic standoff unfolds, the final decision will reflect the broader geopolitical struggle over how the war is framed within the UN and the global approach to achieving peace.
